Geek Squad Renewal Scam: Is It a Scam?
Scammers send fake Geek Squad subscription renewal emails for hundreds of dollars, hoping you will panic and call their fake support number. This has become one of the most widespread email scams in recent years.
How This Scam Works
You receive an email claiming your Geek Squad Total Protection subscription has auto-renewed for $299 to $499. The email includes a fake invoice number and order details. It instructs you to call a number to cancel. When you call, the scammer walks you through installing remote access software under the guise of processing your refund. Once they have access, they may steal files, install keyloggers, or manipulate your online banking to trick you into sending them money.
Red Flags to Watch For
- You never had a Geek Squad subscription
- Email comes from a generic address, not bestbuy.com
- Invoice amount is suspiciously high
- Instructions to call a phone number rather than manage online
- Threatening language about charges being processed today
